Being a Title I school, many of our students do not have access to sports equipment other than through their Physical Education classes, and for some our Middle School Sports Teams. \r\nThe students love playing sports and getting out their energy at lunchtime. It gives them a space to play with friends in a less competitive environment, as well as build new connections and friendships with those who share a same love of the sport. We get close to 150 students out on the courts each day at lunch, spread out over 10 courts, cooperating and finding their ways to share space. In addition to the benefit of physical activity, they are learning great skills on how to work together as a team.\r\nWe opened the courts last year and the balls were so worn from the daily wear, it was so exciting for the students to get new and even more balls this year. Many of the students can't go out to get themselves some of these items, or haven't known about these small ways they can support themselves. \r\nHaving these items helps us replenish each year for a new crop of students. It was neat to see which kids have this skillset of reading directions and even knowing the difference between tightening and loosening a screw! Then, I had many students who were doing something like this for the first time. It was great watching them take ownership over how to build something. I started making birthday cards a few years ago after hearing that kids don't always get celebrated at home. Sometimes parents forget or they have too many responsibilities to squeeze in a moment to celebrate. A simple card can be enough!\r\n\r\nI make the same type of card for every student, add stickers and write a personal note then pass the card around for everyone in that child's class to sign. Their eyes have lit up when I have told them they can keep it. They couldn't believe how many baseball gloves I had for them to check out. The fidgets are amazing as they are used for wellness prizes but also placed around the room for students to utilize whenever they are in the space.
