Our middle school is dedicated, unlike many others, to continue to teach reading skills through guided and independent reading to our students, who are 99% of color and living in a tough urban neighborhood. Our school library collection goes a long way in ensuring equitable access to pleasure reading, but it is getting dated and is not as diverse in representation as we'd like. Most students have no books at home, few have parents who can teach them English, and there are few in the classrooms that still have attractive books for their interests. The library has become the hub of equitable access to exciting and readable books that cater to their interests, but we had no book money this past year. We need more stories that mirror our students' own identities and experiences. These books will be available and shared among all our school's students, parents and teachers.
