We will work our way to the rest of them over the course of this year. My students and I have at this point enjoyed Life, Connect 4, Guess Who?, Candy Land, Ticket to Ride, and Trouble. Three of these games have multiple versions with various themes which allow students the ability to apply the rules they know with slightly different modifications. The consistency and repetition lightens the cognitive load and allows my students to enjoy friendly and fair competition while applying the rules and steps needed on each turn. The hands-on game time has been so refreshing for all of us and I was excited to hear that several of my students asked their parents to purchase a game (especially Trouble!) for them to play at home. \r\nWe have spent time talking through the rules, fair play, and good sportsmanship. These lessons are so valuable for their current and future relationships! Having a pair for each student makes it much easier for everyone to hear videos, read-alouds, and other learning activities without distractions.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been seeing how excited the students are to use them. They really enjoy being able to put on their headphones and focus on their own learning. For some students, having the headphones helps them tune out some of the noise around them and stay focused on their work. It has been great to see them become more independent and comfortable using technology to help them learn. All of my students have enjoyed being able to choose a cushion to sit on, which has helped them stay focused during their speech sessions.\r\n\r\nThey have also loved using the new playdough, suction toy, and emotion fruit toy during play-based activities, whether those activities are language-based or focused on speech sounds.\r\n\r\nThe timer has been especially amazing to have. It helps students know what to expect and allows them to visually see the time counting down. Allowing students to us the markers, whiteboards, and other materials that are hands-on, engagement-promoting impacts their motivation! We use them for reading and math small groups at this time, but they are high quality and will last for years. Students show what they know in real time, not just at the end of the week on an assessment, so I can support their understanding each time we meet. Our favorite use for the boards and markers is currently vocabulary quizzing- a student-led activity where they give small clues and their peers have to write the vocabulary word they are describing. I mentioned to my Principal the other day, that this activity has definitely brought some joy into our routine! Students love checking their mailboxes each day, it's become part of our morning routine and gives them a sense of independence and responsibility.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the mailboxes, they were so excited to have \"their own spot.\" Many of them compared it to having their own little locker or mailbox at home. It's also helped foster ownership and pride in their work, students look forward to seeing their returned assignments and notes of encouragement waiting for them.\r\n\r\nYour donation has done more than help us stay organized, it's strengthened our classroom community.
