We work hard to find ways to provide current and interesting books for students to read. This is a challenge. On top of that, we have a large number of students who are biligual and their primary reading language is not English. We want them to have acceess to good books in their language. We also want to show them that we honor nad appreciate their primary language.\r\n\r\nWith this current donation, we were able to purchase several books in Spanish and Ukranian. We put them in the library and introduced them to the students last week. The excitement and appreciation was obvious. There were a few rounds of rock-paper-scissiors to break the tie between 2 students who wanted the same book. \r\n\r\nWe appreciate the support you gave to our school, our library and our students. Most of our students have not done much traveling, so learning about the world and the places that exist are essential. I love for them to be able to open an atlas and explore the world that is just waiting for discovery.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, we start with a \"5 Themes of Geography\" project which introduces them on how to look at a new place. They learn to ask questions like \"Where is it located?\" and \"What is it like there?\" We explore cultures, beliefs, foods and customs. They get to learn why our area is also special.\r\n\r\nEvery week, students complete a geography assignment. They know to grab an atlas whenever they need one, and they are used every day. I see some students even reaching for them during free time just to look at all the places and information. Because an atlas is paperback and they are used daily, they last about 3-4 years. Our budgets don't allow for replacements very often, so these donations were invaluable.
