In our 8th grade U.S. History and English Language Arts classroom, we learn about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and landmark civil rights cases. We have open discussions about America's history, respect all opinions, and evaluate our founding documents and our country's continued work to achieve the ideals written therein. This unique documentary novel is a remarkable teaching tool--it tells the story of a mixed-race couple who fought for their civil right to marry using free verse poems (alternating his and her perspectives) as well as primary and secondary source historical documents.
