I was so excited when they arrived. I decided to show my kids these drum lids the very first week of school. To make it exciting, I stacked up most of my buckets into a large pyramid on the side table. It was hard to miss when you came into my room! All the kids were immediately excited and asking what they were for. (They have never done bucket drumming in school before.) I showed the class the drum lids and how they fit into our buckets. We talked about rules when we play and even discussed the money they cost, so the kids understand these are instruments and not toys. We talked about how grateful we were that so many donors were kind enough to donate to our classroom so we can learn rhythms and make music in such a fun way! \r\n\r\nMy younger classes were so excited and I let each child hit the top of the drum one time, when they were standing in line to leave. It was basically the highlight of their day!\r\nI gave the older classes a chance to do a bucket drum play along song to Dai Dai, by Shakira the second day of class. After attending a reading conference, I was inspired by the idea that students do not dislike reading—they just have not found the right book yet. These new sports, fantasy, adventure, and relatable books have helped students find stories they are excited to read while building important skills like making connections, analyzing characters, discussing themes, and sharing ideas with others. The Academy series and other sports books were BIG hits in our classroom, with students checking out entire series from the library and even arguing over who got to read the next book. I also had students who connected deeply with the more relatable books and were excited to share their favorites. I was introduced to Building Thinking Classrooms last year and wanted to give my students more opportunities to collaborate, problem-solve, and think out loud together. Before this project was funded, we were making do with small personal whiteboards, which limited how much students could write, share, and visually explain their thinking. Now, with these huge whiteboards, students work in groups around the room, standing, discussing, and actively engaging in each step of the problem. The first time they walked in and saw the boards, they literally cheered. They couldn't wait to grab markers and start working together.\r\n\r\nThese whiteboards have already made learning more interactive and joyful, and students are noticeably more confident explaining their strategies to others. As we continue diving into our current math units, the whiteboards will be the center of our collaborative problem-solving time. Students will keep using them to test ideas, take risks, revise their thinking, and build strong mathematical reasoning through teamwork. I never would have been able to afford these boards on my own, so having this project funded has been an absolute game-changer.
