There have been many studies that have shown the benefits to flexible seating options in classrooms. The traditional student desks are good for many students, but for some, they are just not. Flexible seating helps to engage and better motivate students to focus on their learning and not just a traditional student desk and chair. The 21st Century learner is required to think outside the box. As a teacher, I need to adapt right along with my students. Everything I do in my classroom is based on research and best practices for kids. Redesigning my classroom is not any different. I've found that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. I've done what I can to meet kids needs. I currently have tables raised as high as they can go for those who like stand and one wobble chair. More than one kid in my class usually needs to keep moving; that why I want the wobble stools and the yellow balls. Some kids like their floor time, so the stadium seats, sitting pads, and bean bag chairs will be used for those kids. They will have to option to sit on the floor at a table with short legs or use the lap tables. I feel that these new seating options will motivate my students and help them focus on their learning.
