Instead of seeing a mistake as a failure, students began looking at it as a problem they could solve. They naturally took on different roles, including programmer, engineer, tester, and project manager, while working toward a common goal.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue creating their own Dash challenges that require them to use coding, measurement, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. They will design solutions, test them, make changes, and explain their thinking to others. These projects will give students opportunities to practice skills used in engineering and computer science while making learning active, creative, and fun.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping bring this experience to our classroom. Their excitement grew as we opened the packages containing Painted Lady caterpillars, praying mantis egg pods, and live fruit flies. For many of the children, this was their first opportunity to observe these living creatures so closely and to participate in caring for them.\r\n\r\nThe Painted Lady caterpillars quickly became an important part of our classroom. Each day, the students eagerly checked on them and carefully observed how they were growing and changing. They watched as the tiny caterpillars became larger, formed their chrysalises, and finally emerged as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. This experience allowed the students to see the butterfly life cycle unfold right before their eyes. Instead of simply reading about metamorphosis in a book or looking at pictures, they were able to witness each stage in real life. When it was time to release the butterflies, the students were both excited and a little sad to say goodbye. They understood, however, that the butterflies belonged in nature. Watching them fly away was a wonderful celebration of everything the students had learned.\r\n\r\nOur fruit fly investigation added another special layer to the project. We were fortunate to work with a high school science class whose students helped teach us how to grow and care for the fruit flies. This collaboration was especially meaningful because it allowed our younger students to learn from older students in our school community. The high school students shared their scientific knowledge, demonstrated the process, and helped our class understand why the fruit flies were important. Our students enjoyed asking questions and working with the older students. They felt like real scientists as they observed the fruit flies and helped maintain their growing habitat.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of the project was waiting for the praying mantises to hatch from their egg pods. Every day, the children checked the pods and wondered when the tiny mantises would appear. When the praying mantises finally hatched, the classroom was filled with amazement! The students were fascinated by how small they were and how many emerged from the pods. They carefully observed the baby mantises and learned about their needs, behaviors, and role in nature. The fruit flies we had raised became food for the young praying mantises, allowing the students to observe a real-life food chain and understand how living things depend on one another for survival.\r\n\r\nCaring for the praying mantises required patience, responsibility, teamwork, and gentle hands. The students took their role seriously and understood that these tiny creatures depended on us. When the mantises were ready to be released, the students were proud to return them safely to their natural environment. Releasing them gave us another opportunity to discuss habitats, survival, and the importance of insects in our ecosystem.\r\n\r\nThis project brought science to life in a way that a textbook alone never could. It encouraged the students to ask questions, make careful observations, practice responsibility, and develop respect for living things. It also created lasting memories and helped build a sense of wonder about the natural world. The air-dry clay and rock painting kits were favorites as well, giving students opportunities to be creative, express themselves, and proudly show off their finished projects. The snacks were greatly appreciated and helped keep our students energized and ready to participate throughout the day.\r\nIt was wonderful to see how these resources brought smiles, enthusiasm, and a love of learning into our classroom. Many students immediately tried to spot our home state, while others excitedly pointed out states where they have family members. It was incredible to see how something as simple as a rug could spark such joy and curiosity. What might seem like a classroom accessory quickly became the centerpiece of our learning environment.\r\n\r\nThe colorful USA rug has already transformed how we learn together. Students now gather on the map daily for social studies lessons, morning meetings, read-alouds, and group discussions. Instead of only viewing maps in books, they physically sit on, point to, and even stand on different states as we talk about geography, regions, landmarks, and communities. They love participating in activities where they \"travel\" from one state to another, using cardinal directions to move across the rug. This hands-on approach has strengthened their understanding of spatial awareness and geography in ways that worksheets never could. Even students who are typically quiet have become eager participants, volunteering to locate states or identify oceans and borders. The rug has created a welcoming, collaborative space where students feel connected—not just to each other, but to the country they are learning about.\r\n\r\nThe carpet sweeper has also played an important role in making this new learning space sustainable and student-centered. With 20 energetic second graders using the rug daily, keeping it clean is essential. Students were just as excited to see the carpet sweeper come out of its box as they were about the rug. They immediately asked if they could help use it. Now, after lessons, snack time, or art activities, students volunteer to take turns sweeping. They take pride in caring for their classroom and understand that maintaining a clean space helps everyone enjoy it longer. The sweeper makes cleanup quick and easy, allowing us to transition smoothly between activities without losing valuable instructional time.\r\n\r\nBecause of The Campbell Foundation's generosity, our classroom has gained more than a rug and a cleaning tool—we have gained an interactive learning hub that promotes engagement, responsibility, and collaboration.
