Our music room now has a shiny Candy Apple red electric guitar, and I'm not sure the kids have stopped staring at it yet. When I plugged it in and stepped on the effects pedal for the first time, the room got loud, mostly from the screaming. I heard \"Mr. Butler, you're a rock star!\" more than once, and I won't pretend I didn't enjoy it. The guitar is a smaller, kid-sized model, so even my 3rd graders can get their hands around the neck and play real chords without a struggle.\r\n\r\nThe effects processor has been the big surprise. Students take turns choosing sounds (clean, crunchy, spacey, and yes, the wah pedal) and talking about how each one changes the feel of a song. It's turned into a great lesson on listening and tone, and it's hooked a few kids who never seemed too excited about xylophones. Add in the new cables and guitar stand, and our room finally looks and sounds like a place where a band practices. Setup is quicker, nothing ends up on the floor, and everything has a home.\r\n\r\nHere's the best part: thanks to your gifts and an earlier project that got us a drum pad, we now have a drummer AND a guitarist in our class ensemble. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are working on \"Take Me Home, Country Roads,\" with the guitar playing alongside ukuleles, xylophones, and percussion. Our next goal is a real student rock band performance, and you helped us get one big step closer. My students were beyond excited when we opened all of our gifts. My students love having different places to sit while working at stations, completing independent assignments, and enjoying a good book in our reading corner. In fact, I even have students choosing to read instead of using their computers just so they can enjoy our new seating options!\r\n\r\nThe Pop Its have also become a favorite for both reading and math. My students love using them to practice spelling words and solve math problems, making learning more hands-on and enjoyable. Each student also has their own privacy wall, which helps them take greater responsibility for their materials and stay focused during independent work. The spinners will add even more fun to our classroom games and learning activities.\r\n\r\nThese gifts have brought so much joy to our classroom while giving students new ways to learn, stay engaged, and take ownership of their work. Students are learning to recognize and create patterns while developing an understanding of how coding instructions work together to accomplish a specific goal. The smiles on their faces was priceless when they saw we had received them. \r\n\r\nStudents worked collaboratively to plan and test their codes, communicate their ideas, and make adjustments when their mouse did not reach the intended destination. They were able to physically manipulate the coding pieces, which helped make an abstract concept like coding more concrete and engaging. Through trial and error, students began to understand that the number and sequence of steps matter when creating a successful code.\r\n\r\nOne of the most valuable aspects of the kits was the opportunity to provide younger elementary students with a resource that our school would not otherwise have been able to afford. The Code & Go Mouse Kits introduced these students to a new learning experience and allowed them to explore STEM concepts in an exciting, interactive way. Students genuinely appreciated having access to this different learning tool and were eager to work together, experiment, and solve coding challenges. I find it very important for the students to learn and create using their hands instead of just books and paper. \r\n\r\nWe are already brainstorming on some Halloween coding for our students to use the Mouse to complete. In the beginning, I thought these would be great for my kindergarten and first grade students. Our new Alesis sample pad and Yamaha kick pedal showed up, and my music room hasn't been quiet since. Well, the kick pedal is technically silent, which is the best kind of kick drum to have in a room full of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. When I pulled everything out of the box, the kids reacted like I'd unwrapped a brand new gaming console. Hands shot up all over the room with \"Can I try it?\" and \"Mr. Butler, does it do a cowbell?\" (It does. We have used the cowbell a lot. Maybe too much.)\r\n\r\nBefore this, we had xylophones, ukuleles, djembes, and bongos, but nothing that could hold down the beat the way a drummer does. Now we do, and the difference is huge. Students take turns as our \"band drummer,\" keeping a steady beat on the pad and the kick pedal while everyone else plays their parts on top. It turns out that learning to work your hands and your foot together is harder than it looks, and it's a lot of fun watching kids figure that out. When one of my quieter students finally locked in a full groove and the whole class cheered, I'm pretty sure I grinned bigger than he did.\r\n\r\nNext up, my 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are learning an arrangement of John Denver's \"Take Me Home, Country Roads,\" and our new drum setup is going to drive the whole thing. Each class will have xylophones, ukuleles, and percussion parts, all held together by a student drummer, and they can't wait to perform it. So many students don't enjoy reading and making reading fun is essential to get them to enjoy reading. The rolling white board is helping so much when we create anchor charts. We also used it in small groups. \r\n\r\nWe started Johnny Appleseed week. They loved using the new paint brushes to paint apple trees today. They love painting and making crafts. We will also make applesauce.\r\n\r\nThe white boards are helping them practice writing sentences and also conserving paper. Students love using whiteboards and expo markers. It makes them feel like the teacher. We use them in small groups daily.
