These may seem like simple classroom supplies, but for our students, they will make a tremendous difference in the learning opportunities we are able to provide.\r\n\r\nOur classroom at Trevor Browne High School serves students in special education who have significant learning and support needs. Many of our students learn best through hands-on, visual, and repeated practice. We are in the process of creating a Skills Lab, a safe and supportive environment where students can practice important everyday living skills and build greater independence.\r\n\r\nYour donation is helping us take the first steps toward making our Skills Lab a reality. The printer, cardstock, laminator, and other supplies will allow us to create durable, individualized activities, visual supports, task cards, practice materials, and hands-on learning opportunities that students can use again and again.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources will give our students opportunities to practice skills in a safe, non-threatening environment before applying them in the community and in everyday life. Having a five-subject notebook for each student has allowed us to create organized, interactive Medical Assisting notebooks that students will continue building throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nStudents are already using their notebooks for much more than simply copying notes. They use different sections to organize class notes, hands-on activities, clinical practice, and review materials. One of our recent lessons focused on patient intake and clinical reasoning. Students used their notebooks to record key concepts and then applied what they learned to patient scenarios, identifying important findings, determining what additional questions they should ask, and explaining their clinical reasoning. Having all of this information together allows students to look back at previous lessons as they begin applying those concepts during hands-on practice.\r\n\r\nThe next step is for students to continue building their notebooks as we move into more clinical skills and simulations. Throughout the year, they will add reference materials, practice activities, reflections, and corrections from assessments. It's been wonderful to see how something as simple as having water and a snack available can make such a positive impact on their participation and overall mood.\r\n\r\nWhen the resources first arrived, the students were genuinely excited and grateful. You could see the relief on the faces of those who often experience food insecurity—it meant a lot to them to know they had access to something to eat without needing to ask or spend money. Their reactions reminded all of us how small gestures of care can create a big difference in the classroom.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I hope to secure additional funding so that this support can continue throughout the school year.
