We have begun our tour of the United States and capitals. The many features of these Atlases bring a higher engagement to students as they study the United States. The detailed pictures of landscapes, monuments, and geographical features help them relate to the specific areas of the U.S. Many of them are able to say, \"Hey, I've been there.\" Which leads to a discussion among classmates of places they have been. We will continue our journey with the studying the countries around the world and I expect the same level of engagement.\r\n\r\nI believe it is so important for students to learn about the world in which they live. Many students entered my room not knowing where Mexico and Canada were located in relation to the U.S. let alone, Alaska. They are enthralled with the whole astronomy study. What fun they had posing in front of the spaceship background.\r\n\r\nThe stuffed Earth, Sun, and Moon brought the words rotate and orbit to life. First, we tossed them around and played with them. I know if I don't let them play first they won't be able to focus on using them to learn. These teaching tools helped them act out the Earth and Moon rotations and orbits. We sat in a circle and one child held the sun in the middle. We passed the earth around the circle counter-clockwise as we rotated it. A student rotated and orbited the moon and tried to keep up with the Earth. \r\n\r\nThe world 3-D map puzzles have been a big hit. Students love taking them apart and figuring out where all of the US, Europe, and Africa belong. We've studied so many places this year and they impress me every day with their knowledge of geography. The 3-D Andes Mountains helped them understand the landscape of the Inca civilization. I can't wait to use them to point out the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains when we learn about the birth of our country and the westward expansion.","fullyFundedDate":1731557878157,"projectUrl":"project/learning-alive/8876274/","projectTitle":"Learning Alive!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fossler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1518460_orig.jpg?crop=1381,1381,x0,y694&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753766442294","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-fossler"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_69786","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":427,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":24,"percentAsian":11,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":8,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"17.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":69786,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Trailside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Trailside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alaska/anchorage-school-district/trailside-elementary-school/69786"}
