Thanks to this project, students now have access to engaging visual supports that help them strengthen all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.\r\n\r\nThe materials have made our short A lessons more interactive and meaningful. Students can see pictures, connect sounds to words, practice speaking with their classmates, and build confidence as they read and write simple CVC words like cat, map, and hat. The added visuals help make language more understandable and give students multiple ways to show what they know.\r\n\r\nI've already seen students become more engaged, more willing to take risks with language, and more confident during literacy activities. One hundred students benefited from the additional copies of the book My Librarian is a Camel. Going from 1 copy per teacher to 7 copies per teacher was a game changer during this reading and writing unit. \r\nOur reading curriculum often selects engaging informational texts that can be used for multiple lessons. The lessons begin with a teacher model (the teachers focused on Kenya), then moves to guided practice (the whole class focused on Finland). After a week or two of carefully guided practice, students worked independently to complete the same task. The additional copies of My Librarian is a Camel allowed student choice when selecting a country to research and write about. We have enjoyed starting each week with a meaningful read aloud. Each book is written beautifully and has been a great introduction to our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) topic of the week. \r\nWe read a lot in my classroom. Students are expected to read to learn, read to improve their fluency, and read for enjoyment. The SEL read alouds purchased through this grant allow us to read to start a conversation. One great example is with the book Quiet Please, Owen McPhee! This book addresses blurting and interrupting during lessons. Another example is from our school-wide Bully Prevention Week. We read Stick & Stone, a lovely book that teaches the importance of kindness. Next up is the book aptly named Sorry.
