We have put the materials right to work. Upon arrival, the LEDs were immediately integrated. We are learning about conductivity and electricity. We built basic circuits using play-doh, AA batteries and the LEDs. The LEDs indicated when the circuit was complete. With my background in Kinesiology, we applied the concept of sodium conducting electricity to the electrical impulse pattern in muscles. Connecting why a drop in sodium and potassium can cause muscle cramping.Thank you for providing the LEDs.\r\nThe straws were utilized in both the Robot Hand and the Mobile Project. To complete the Robot Hands, the students traced their hands, then segmented the straws to mimic the bones of the hand. Finally, using the yarn also provided in this Donors Choose Project, the students threaded yarn through each 'joint', ultimately creating a operational hand. The student operated the strings to \"fist bump\" each other, show he/she is #1 and the ASL \"I love you\". \r\nIn the Mobile Project, the straws were utilized as axles. These axles were added to the STEM hobby motor kits provided by this Donors Choose project, providing inspiration and resources to the students. The Mobile Project was a \"blank canvas\" project, where I provided students with materials and let them dream up how to make a mobile; something that moved. As a preemptive measure, the students were required to sketch their design on a provided worksheet. The worksheet required the students to estimate their chassis width, wheel dimension, and axle length. The students used the rulers and tape measures provided in this Project to do so. \r\nThe pictures exhibit some of the ideas generated by the students, using the available resources. The mobiles are kept together using the glue sticks provided by this Donors Choose project. You'll notice the wire strippers in the supplies picture. Having enough tools enables more students to actively participate in the development of the Mobile. Thank you for supplying the wire strippers, STEM kit, glue sticks, tape measures, rulers and LEDs. \r\nSoon we will be using the leather kits to design keychains with an inspirational message. The keychains can be kept or given as a gift. Displaying the projects reminds the students that they can and are, a powerful confidence.\r\nYour dedication to an engaging learning experience is propelling my students to greater understanding, bigger, broader thinking and increased collaboration skills.
