Your donation has given my students an important tool that they use regularly as they learn English and become more confident readers, listeners, and speakers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, headphones are an essential part of learning. Many of my students are at the beginning stages of learning English, so hearing the language while they read is incredibly helpful. Students use their headphones to listen to audio versions of texts while following along. This allows them to hear correct pronunciation, recognize new vocabulary, and make connections between written and spoken English.\r\n\r\nThe headphones also allow students to work independently and at their own pace. A student can pause the audio, replay a difficult section, or listen to a word or sentence again without interrupting other students. This is especially valuable for newcomers who may need additional time and repetition as they develop their English skills.\r\n\r\nWe also use technology to practice speaking and reading aloud. Students frequently record themselves reading so they can practice pronunciation, fluency, and expression. Having their own headphones makes these activities much easier and helps students focus on their individual language goals.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding things to see is students becoming more independent. Instead of waiting for the teacher to pronounce every unfamiliar word or read every passage aloud, they can use audio support to continue learning on their own. With repeated practice, they begin recognizing more words, understanding more of what they read, and feeling more comfortable using English.","fullyFundedDate":1780330359758,"projectUrl":"project/linking-to-stem-graphic-novels-with-aud/10312129/","projectTitle":"Linking to STEM: Graphic Novels with Audio Support","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Perez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6326512_orig.jpg?crop=743,743,x0,y210&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754203892221","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-perezclassproject"},{"teacherId":6326512,"projectId":10236474,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping bring meaningful and engaging literature into our ELD I newcomer classroom. My students are learning English while also adjusting to a new school and academic environment. Having accessible and engaging texts gives them the opportunity to experience important literature while continuing to develop their English skills.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly supported and interactive. We add audio support so students can hear fluent English while following along with the text. Students also read individually, which gives them time to work at their own pace and build their reading confidence and stamina. After reading, students discuss the text with partners and small groups. We use sentence starters, academic vocabulary, visuals, and other language supports to help students communicate their ideas in English.\r\n\r\nThese books allow us to practice many important academic skills. Students learn about characters, conflict, theme, symbolism, setting, and point of view. They also practice summarizing, making predictions, finding evidence, asking questions, and explaining their opinions. Our discussions give students an important opportunity to practice academic English with their peers in a supportive environment.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things to see is how excited my students become about classic literature. They are learning about the literary canon and discovering stories, characters, and ideas that have influenced literature and culture for generations. Texts that may have seemed intimidating at first become stories that they can understand, discuss, and enjoy.\r\n\r\nI especially enjoy watching my beginning English learners gain confidence as readers. Even students who are still developing basic English can participate when they have audio, vocabulary, visual, and peer support. Your generosity is giving students who are just beginning to learn English greater access to literature and the opportunity to experience the excitement of reading and discussing books with their classmates.\r\n\r\nGraphic novels are especially powerful for newcomer students because the combination of images and text helps make challenging stories more understandable. The visuals provide important context that allows students to make predictions, understand characters and events, learn new vocabulary, and follow complex plots. This support gives students the confidence to engage with literature that might otherwise feel overwhelming.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is also very collaborative. Students first have opportunities to read and explore the text, and then they participate in structured literature circles with their peers. We use sentence frames and academic vocabulary to help students discuss characters, conflicts, themes, and important events. Students learn how to ask questions, share opinions, respond to their classmates, and support their ideas with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of this project is seeing students become interested in literature that they may not have believed they could read in English. They are discovering important stories and classic literature while building their English skills at the same time. The graphic format gives them an entry point, but the conversations and activities surrounding the books challenge them to think critically and communicate their ideas.\r\n\r\nStudents who were once hesitant to participate are beginning to contribute to discussions and share what they notice in the books. It is wonderful to see them point to a page, explain an idea to a classmate, make a connection, or confidently use a new academic word during a discussion.","fullyFundedDate":1780079573328,"projectUrl":"project/building-literacy-future-ready-skills-t/10236293/","projectTitle":"Building Literacy, Future-Ready Skills Through Graphic Novels and Literature Circles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Perez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6326512_orig.jpg?crop=743,743,x0,y210&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754203892221","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-perezclassproject"},{"teacherId":8043993,"projectId":10100966,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity.
