Engagement is key in getting students to buy in and grow in reading. My 'rising readers' are kindergarten and first grade students who are so eager to continue their journey as readers and writers and these materials will help them meet their literacy goals! The students are using the materials we received in a number of different settings. First, during the mornings students come to our classroom from their homerooms to get support in the literacy skills they need most working in small groups. They have loved playing the literacy games and it is so fun to see them working with their peers independently while I am able to run small groups with focused instruction using the resources designed for that purpose. Additionally, we have an extra section of kindergarten and first graders this year so in addition to their art, music, and gym special areas we were able to do something creative and add a section of specials called 'rising readers' where we focus on literacy skills. We are using the materials during this class as well as it is brand new and we were starting from scratch with resources. The kids helped unpackage the materials and it was like Christmas. It was so special seeing them so excited about learning games. Additionally, some of the school supplies we received helped in that area as well since it is a brand new class and not a home room there were no supplies.
