The new resources have made a profound, immediate impact on our second graders.\r\n\r\nFirst Reactions\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their eyes lit up with pure excitement. They were so eager to try out the new tools and see what this special new corner of our classroom was all about!\r\n\r\nHow We Are Using the New Resources\r\nDuring the first two weeks of school, we practiced how to use the calming corner and its emotional regulation tools. Today, it is amazing to watch the students utilize these resources independently whenever they feel overwhelmed, sad, or frustrated.\r\nThe calming corner has supported students facing vulnerable times, such as navigating grief or missing a parent. It has also helped tremendously with daily academic frustration. Recently, a student grew deeply frustrated while practicing her math facts. Recognizing she needed a reset, she visited the calming corner to recharge, then returned ready to learn. She walked straight over to a small group practicing addition facts with flashcards and successfully jumped right back into her learning with a positive mindset!\r\n\r\nWhat's Next\r\nAs we dive deeper into a challenging curriculum, our goal is to help students carry these tools beyond our calming corner and into every part of their lives. Students will practice using these self-regulation strategies during peer collaborations, learning how to work through social conflicts and group frustrations with empathy and patience. They will also take greater ownership of their learning by setting personal goals during independent work. Through your donation, my students will have the full chance to have good scores on their computer assessments. Believe it or not, kindergarten students are expected to take growth assessments to show how much they have learned throughout the year. They have only really used touch screens in their lives, so these tests can be difficult. Some of the questions require students to drag answers. The touch screens and track pads on the Chromebooks don't always work properly, so they need a mouse to make it work. So with your donation, the children now can use the mouse and have the opportunity to get the right answers on every question. \r\n\r\nAlso the cords for headphones have been great replacements for the broken cords and broken audio jacks on the Chromebooks.
