At our school, attendance can be one of our biggest challenges. Many of our students face unique circumstances and obstacles that make coming to school consistently difficult. We wanted to find a way to make attendance something students were excited about, and the chance to win a pair of AirPods did exactly that! From the moment we announced the incentive, students were motivated, engaged, and eager to improve their attendance for a chance to win.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project was watching students make a genuine effort to arrive on time and attend school every day. Students who previously struggled with attendance began paying closer attention to their daily habits, asking about their progress, and encouraging one another to show up. The AirPods became more than just a prize; they became a reason to set goals, build better routines, and take pride in their accomplishments. For many of our students, simply making it to school on time is a meaningful victory, and this project gave us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those successes. It was exciting to see how one incentive could create such positive energy throughout our school!\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we hope to build on this momentum by continuing to encourage consistent attendance, celebrating individual growth, and helping students recognize the connection between showing up and being successful. Our ultimate goal is for students to develop habits that will benefit them long after they leave our school. While only a few students may walk away with AirPods, every student who made the effort to improve their attendance walked away with something valuable: a sense of accomplishment and the confidence that they can reach their goals. Thank you for helping us create excitement around education and reminding our students that showing up matters. From the moment we introduced the new materials, students were excited to explore them and discover which tools worked best for their individual needs. The weighted animals, weighted blanket, and sensory magnets have quickly become the favorites! In fact, they are consistently the first items students reach for and have been some of our most effective resources for helping students settle their bodies, manage their emotions, and refocus on learning.\r\n\r\nOur school serves students from many different backgrounds, many of whom have experienced significant challenges and trauma in their young lives. Emotional regulation doesn't always come easily, and sometimes something as simple as holding a weighted animal, wrapping up in a weighted blanket, or quietly manipulating sensory magnets can make all the difference. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch students begin to recognize when they are feeling overwhelmed and independently choose a tool that helps them regulate. These small moments are actually huge victories! Instead of allowing frustration or anxiety to derail their day, students are learning that they have strategies and resources available to help them work through difficult emotions.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue incorporating these resources into our daily routines while helping students develop greater self-awareness, independence, and emotional regulation skills. Our ultimate goal is to teach students strategies they can carry beyond our school and into their everyday lives. Your donation has helped to provide resources to our Community Outreach room to help remove some of those barriers. \r\n\r\nStudents have been significantly utilizing the resources in this room. It is a new resource at our school and we have been shocked by the need. Just this year we have already provided 70 chapsticks to students, most of which were donated through this modality. We have used the gum to incentivize school attendance by holding weekly lotteries each Friday for those who have attended every class that week. The calming strips are provided for students who just need an extra reminder that they can in fact make it through the school day. They remind our students that they are seen and cared for.\r\n\r\nWithout your donation, we would not be able to provide these resources and we are so grateful to you for your willingness to give at this time. Students have gone from learning the basics of fly tying in the classroom to actually tying their own flies and then putting their new skills to the test at Strawberry Reservoir. There is something incredibly rewarding about watching a student carefully create a fly with their own hands, cast it into the water, and then catch a fish using something they made themselves. The excitement and pride they feel in those moments is unforgettable.\r\nWhat makes this class especially meaningful is the way it brings students from many different walks of life together around a shared experience. For a few hours, the focus isn't on where they come from or what challenges they may be facing—it is on learning a new skill, being outside, working together, and experiencing nature. Students are learning about fish and their habitats, responsible recreation, and the importance of taking care of the places we enjoy. They are also learning patience, perseverance, and the value of trying something unfamiliar.\r\nOur next steps are to continue building their fly-tying skills and expanding their knowledge of fishing, conservation, and the natural world. We hope to give students even more opportunities to get outside, practice what they have learned, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.
