As a classroom of students who have faced significant trauma and have emotional disabilities, diving deep into the characters has allowed for individual reflection. The Grape family has endured trauma that has not been properly dealt with and has caused difficulty in future relationships. We have used the characters to write a character analysis essay. This students are able to connect with the characters due to their similar pasts. \r\n\r\nA typical day of reading in our classroom looks like reading as a collective group. Each student chooses a character to read, and I read as the narrator. We pause periodically to analyze why characters are reacting the way they are reacting. \r\n\r\nWhile some students are openly enjoying the book more than others, the class as a whole is participating and adding to conversations. They have also been critical of the parts left out of the movie, showing that they are in fact paying attention and engage.","fullyFundedDate":1769191989081,"projectUrl":"project/johnny-depp-and-leonardo-dicaprio-in-hig/9883217/","projectTitle":"Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio in High School English","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mott","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10345816"},{"teacherId":7182913,"projectId":8862857,"letterContent":"My students and I have been using the anxiety fidgets as part of our daily mindfulness routine. I've integrated them into our calm-down corner and small group activities focused on self-regulation. One specific project involved students creating \"Mindfulness Toolkits\" where they selected a fidget that best helped them manage their focus or stress, and then wrote reflections about how it supported their learning. During testing weeks especially, I noticed students quietly reaching for their chosen fidgets to help stay calm and centered.\r\nThe students' reactions were priceless, pure excitement and curiosity! They immediately wanted to try each fidget and share which ones felt the most helpful to them. Some students even expressed that they felt \"seen\" because the classroom now had resources that directly acknowledged the challenges of anxiety and attention. It sparked great conversations about healthy coping tools and respecting everyone's different needs.\r\nOur next steps involve incorporating these tools into a broader social-emotional learning unit. Students are working on identifying emotions, recognizing anxiety triggers, and developing personalized strategies for self-regulation. The fidgets are becoming part of their self-care strategies, and we're building toward creating personal \"calm plans\" they can use not just in school, but in their lives beyond the classroom. Thank you for giving us the tools to make this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1728868851162,"projectUrl":"project/reading-begins-with-caring-for-your-mind/8862857/","projectTitle":"Reading Begins With Caring For Your Mind!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parish","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7182913_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y239&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752620946890","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7182913"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_29924","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":319,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":29924,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sullivan High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sullivan High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/sullivan-community-unit-school-district-300/sullivan-high-school/29924"}
