Students were so excited to start the year with these supplies in my room. My space is used as a place to take a break, discuss difficult topics or emotions, and to check-in on school and life in general. Having these tools available to students helps them to discuss more and for longer periods of time. They give students something to do with their hands so that they don't have to constantly make eye contact. It always them to feel grounded, safe, and open to discussion.\r\n\r\nWe were also able to do a coloring contest this year with the supplies! Grades 4th-8th participated. Having these resources helped more students participate. The school voted on their favorites and we had prizes. It was a fun activity to bring us into winter break, and it was exciting to see how creative students are!\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for your contribution! I have a safe space set up in my classroom for students to take breaks when they are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, sad, or tired. There are many different tools that are available for them to use to help regulate their emotions and help keep their bodies safe at school.\r\nWhen I added one of these weighted stuffed animals to the safe space, I noticed students gravitating to it for a quick cuddle, a hug, or even to hold while looking at books. I even have a student who has started to carry it around the classroom with calm purpose where he used to run or wander. He is super engaged in learning while holding on to the weighted cat!\r\nI have since added the teddy bear and the fox and my class have named them and they ask to take breaks with the weighted animals or ask to use the weighted animals during large and small group time. The weight of the animals is prefect for my students. They really seem to be grounded and supported, better able to tune in and focus, when they are cuddling and holding one of these animals. My students had a blast when I put out the mini bricks and shaving cream for them to build their own brick structures. The texture and weight of the mini bricks is perfect for little hands to explore and build and they feel so real! This has become a favorite material in our class and it will lead to so much imaginative building in our block center for years to come.\r\nThe light table tray has been a game changer for how we are able to use our light table as well.
