Students worked together to plan, build, and maintain a small school garden that could continue producing vegetables and herbs throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nThe project began with students researching traditional gardening methods used by local communities and families. They learned how people historically relied on seasonal planting, composting, and water conservation to grow food. Students then applied modern engineering thinking to improve these practices. Working in small teams, they designed raised garden beds using recycled wood and created simple irrigation systems made from reused plastic bottles to slowly water plants.\r\n\r\nThroughout the month, students planted lettuce, spinach, herbs, and radishes—crops that grow quickly and can be harvested multiple times. They also built a compost bin using leftover cafeteria food scraps and dried leaves collected from the school grounds. This compost will continue to enrich the soil for future planting cycles.\r\n\r\nStudents monitored plant growth, recorded observations, and discussed how environmental factors such as sunlight, soil quality, and water affected their garden. By combining traditional knowledge with creative problem-solving, students gained hands-on experience with sustainability and engineering design.\r\n\r\nThe garden will remain a continuous project for future classes. Students will rotate responsibilities for watering, composting, and harvesting, ensuring the garden stays productive throughout the year. This project helped students understand how innovation can build on traditional practices to create sustainable solutions for future generations.","fullyFundedDate":1763595713960,"projectUrl":"project/bridging-tradition-and-innovation-susta/9888211/","projectTitle":"Bridging Tradition and Innovation: Sustainable Engineering for Future Generations","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stockmar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8670120_orig.jpg?crop=1212,1212,x0,y298&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661964540370","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8670120"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_62382","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1014,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":69,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":34.6,"schoolId":62382,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Stephens Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Stephens Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/salem-keizer-school-district-24j/stephens-middle-school/62382"}
