Your contribution has provided my students with an opportunity to explore and important and often overlooked part of North American history through the power of literature. As a 200-level college literature course, our class focuses on developing critical thinking, analytical reading, and thoughtful discussion skills. This novel will allow students to strengthen those skills while engaging with meaningful questions about identity, culture, resilience, and the lasting effects of historical injustice.\r\n\r\nBefore we started the novel, students researched the history of Indigenous boarding and residential schools in the United States and Canada. As they read Indian Horse, they are using that research to make connections between historical realities and the experiences portrayed in the novel. Through close reading, literary analysis, and classroom discussions, students are examining how Wagamese uses storytelling to deepen, complicate, and sometimes challenge our understanding of history. Ultimately, they will consider what literature can reveal about the human experience that historical facts and statistics alone may not fully communicate. The images I have provided show this close reading in action. Note that in two of the images, you catch students reacting to particularly jarring scenes in the novel.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made it possible for students to engage with a powerful work of Indigenous literature while developing skills that will serve them well beyond this classroom. More importantly, you have helped create an opportunity for them to broaden their perspectives, question assumptions, and develop a deeper understanding of experiences different from their own. I am incredibly grateful for your investment in my students and for helping make this meaningful learning experience possible. Thank you for supporting not just the books we read, but the conversations, discoveries, and growth that come from reading them!","fullyFundedDate":1779054821515,"projectUrl":"project/multi-ethnic-literature-novel/10294077/","projectTitle":"Multi-Ethnic Literature Novel","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Budworth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1862788_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y128&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1774897181323","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1862788"},{"teacherId":10457812,"projectId":10133388,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for our strings, guitar amp chords, and new travel drum. For this particular unit, we watched videos of firsthand accounts and read two of the selections from \"The Good Immigrant\" (\"How to Write Iranian-American, or The Last Essay\" by Porochista Khakpour and \"Dispatches from the Language Wars\" by Daniel Jose Older). Introducing common struggles that first generation Americans face every day has been eye-opening for my small town, low diversity students. They made poignant observations about classmates whose first language is not English, especially regarding the difficulties those students face in trying to \"fit in\" while retaining a valuable piece of their culture and identity. \r\nThis is the first unit, and I am already seeing the impact that the experience of taking this class is going to make on them.\r\nThank you so much for your generosity.
