One powerful moment happened during independent reading time when a student began to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Instead of escalating, they independently chose to take a short break in the regulation tent, used the breathing lamp to slow their breathing, and returned to class ready to learn. Seeing a seven-year-old recognize their own needs and use tools appropriately was incredibly rewarding. The fidget toys are also used during lessons to help students stay focused while listening, especially during longer read-alouds or mini-lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were full of excitement and curiosity. Their eyes lit up when the tent was set up, and many immediately asked thoughtful questions like, \"Can this help us calm down?\" and \"Is this for when we feel worried or upset?\" We talked together about how these tools are not toys, but supports to help our brains and bodies feel ready to learn. The students took that conversation seriously and showed great respect from the very first day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, students are learning lifelong skills in self-awareness and emotional regulation. Our next steps include continuing our social-emotional learning lessons focused on identifying emotions, choosing coping strategies, and reflecting on what helps us reset and refocus. Students will practice naming their feelings, selecting appropriate tools, and eventually discussing what strategies work best for them. These resources are helping us build a classroom culture where it is safe to feel, pause, and grow. I plan to add some fairy lights and some cushions to the tent in the future to make it a place that truly feels calming and comforting when students need a place to themselves to regulate.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students more than just materials—you've given them confidence, calm, and tools they will carry with them far beyond second grade. We learn about the seed parts, and then plant our seeds and care for them. As they grow, we learn to observe the new plants, noticing any changes, and recording them in our plant journals. \r\nAlong with plant science, we practice using and writing adjectives to describe the changes, and we practice measurement with rulers. These skills of observation, descriptive writing, math measurement, graphing our plant growth, and comparing our plants to others in the classroom are using the very skills taught as part of our curriculum. The fun comes when they get to apply these newly acquired skills in real-life experiences. \r\nThe seeds are expensive for any class budget, and while we try to use the new seeds the plants produce for a few years, having fresh seeds helps the project be more successful.
