At our school, many of our students have limited access to books at home, so having a book they can call their own is incredibly meaningful. This project not only supports their growth as readers, but also helps them feel proud, celebrated, and excited about taking the next step into first grade.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an interactive and engaging experience. Students are learning foundational skills such as recognizing sight words, retelling stories, and making connections between texts and their own lives. This book, in particular, helps us talk about important themes like growth, change, and new beginnings. Our students are especially excited when they see themselves reflected in stories about going to first grade; some eagerly share what they're looking forward to, while others are building confidence by \"reading\" through pictures and familiar words.\r\n\r\nYour support is helping our students see themselves as readers and giving them a keepsake they will treasure. The moment they receive their books and shirts at graduation will be one they remember, reinforcing just how far they've come this year. Because of you, our students have not lacked anything. First and foremost, I cannot express how amazing it feels to have gone the entire school year so far without having to worry about pencils and erasers. We use a lot of paper, pencils, and erasers in math every single day, and your kindness has completely eliminated that burden.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, we frequently use dry erase boards in class to practice math skills. Anytime a student said, \"This marker isn't working,\" I was able to immediately pull out a replacement. That simple ability made instruction smoother and kept learning moving forward without interruption.\r\n\r\nIt's truly amazing how the smallest things can make the biggest difference in student success. I was so excited to set up the swing so that my students could begin the year with some new sensory experiences. This year I have a couple of new students in my class as well who have greatly benefited from both the swing and the spinning chairs! When the felt boards and materials arrived, the excitement was immediate. Students rushed over to explore, running their fingers over the pieces and asking how they could use them. It was a beautiful moment of curiosity and joy. We kicked things off by retelling The Very Hungry Caterpillar using felt story pieces. Each student had a chance to add to the board as we walked through the story together. It was amazing to watch even my quietest students get involved and light up as they participated.\r\nSince then, the felt boards have become a daily tool in our classroom. In our literacy center, students use felt letters to build sight words and practice spelling. During math, they use felt numbers and symbols to model addition and subtraction problems, helping them visualize and understand math concepts in a hands-on way. For science, we've used the boards to explore the butterfly life cycle and other topics by moving felt images to show each stage. This tactile and visual method makes abstract ideas more concrete and memorable.","fullyFundedDate":1736372165620,"projectUrl":"project/touchable-tales-interactive-felt-story/8795755/","projectTitle":"Touchable Tales: Interactive Felt Story Boards","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Avakian","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9755106_orig.jpg?crop=983,983,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726615138109","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9755106"},{"teacherId":9652549,"projectId":8642368,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity. I love doing read alouds every day with my new learners! They are able to learn a lot of new vocabulary from the books I read, as well as use their imaginations and transform themselves into the characters in the books we read! They are able to start learning how to read correctly by listening to me, they can hear all the fun and funny voices I use for the different characters, and they can also learn how punctuation works with inflectional endings as well! \r\n We start to learn how to retell a story and I can ask them questions about what they heard. These are good skills to start practicing and learning now, as they will have to do them when they get older. They also begin to learn the parts of a book and how to hold and read a book correctly! My favorite thing is when I see my students playing in the book center, \"reading\" a book, and especially when they pretend to be the teacher and hold the book out the way I do to show all the pictures to their friends! \r\n They are like little sponges, and when you read familiar stories to them they are able to retell those stories again by \"reading\" them themselves! There's nothing better than seeing the look on their sweet faces when they think they can finally read a book on their own, and how excited they get when they can say the lines the right way! It was wonderful to see their smiling faces as they felt like they could choose how to personalize their pencil. \r\n\r\nStudents still use their pencil for a lot of activities, especially in English Language Arts. Every Friday students take a digital test, which helps them receive instant feedback as well as prepare them for the standardized tests which are all on the computer. However, I print out a copy of the test each week, so when we review it students can use Close Reading Strategies. They underline key words, circle words they don't know, and use the process of elimination to help determine the best answer. \r\n\r\nStudents also use their pencils for writing and drawing.
