The materials you provided—lamination sheets, cardstock, pencil grips, pencil weights, carpet markers, timers, and rug circles—are now woven into our daily routines in ways that directly strengthen independence, communication, and confidence.\r\n\r\nHow we are using the new resources\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite recent projects involved creating individualized visual schedules and task boards using the lamination sheets and cardstock you funded. Because the materials are now sturdy and reusable, my students can move their \"finished\" icons independently and practice transitions with far greater success. We also laminated communication boards for our non-verbal students, allowing them to participate more fully during group activities.\r\n\r\nThe pencil grips and pencil weights have been game-changing during writing time. Students who previously struggled to hold a pencil or maintain pressure can now participate in handwriting practice with less fatigue and more accuracy. Several of my students have actually asked for writing time because the tools make it feel \"easier\" and \"not scary anymore.\"\r\n\r\nThe carpet markers and rug circles have helped us create clearly defined spaces during morning meeting, literacy centers, and movement breaks. One of my students—who often has difficulty staying within a designated area—now confidently walks to \"his\" orange rug circle and beams with pride when he sits down independently.\r\n\r\nOur timers have become essential self-regulation tools. Students now use them to monitor their breaks, track work periods, and prepare for transitions. We've noticed a significant decrease in challenging behaviors simply because expectations are visible and predictable.\r\n\r\nA special moment from our classroom\r\n\r\nThe day the materials arrived, my students were wide-eyed and excited. They explored the new rug circles by hopping from one color to another like a game, and several students lined up to test the different pencil grips. One student hugged the laminated schedule I made for her and said, \"This is mine? For me?\" That moment alone made every hour of preparation worth it.\r\n\r\nWhat's next for our classroom\r\n\r\nWe are currently working on a community-helpers unit where students rotate through small-group tasks such as sorting uniforms, labeling tools, and matching community places. Thanks to your donated materials, each station now includes laminated task cards, color-coded carpet markers, and visual supports that help the students complete multi-step activities more independently.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to use these materials to build durable social stories and functional life-skills tasks (like brushing teeth, washing hands, and packing a backpack). These new tools will help us increase consistency, generalization, and confidence for our learners across every part of the school day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students feel more successful, more capable, and more included than ever before. Thank you for giving my learners the tools they need to grow.\r\n\r\nWith gratitude,","fullyFundedDate":1713825709789,"projectUrl":"project/materials-needed-for-special-education-c/8317684/","projectTitle":"Materials Needed for Special Education Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Brown","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9513905_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y711&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754426913023","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9513905"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83018","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":511,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"12.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":52.0,"schoolId":83018,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nevada/elko-county-school-district/southside-elementary-school/83018"}
