For some, it was their very first time on an airplane, their first passport, and their first glimpse of a world far beyond their neighborhoods.\r\n\r\nOur small group of 5 was combined with three other groups from Chicago, Atlanta and Baltimore, creating a large group of 46, and together, students walked the streets of Johannesburg and Soweto, stood in the shadow of history at the Apartheid Museum, and soaked in the beauty of Cape Town. They immersed themselves in a new culture and experienced the thrill of an African Safari and the joy of drumming and dancing at the Gold Restaurant's cultural dinner show. Each moment held new lessons, new perspectives, and new possibilities. Friendships were formed and memories were created that will last a lifetime.\r\n\r\nFrom the thrill of stepping into an airport to the pride of holding a passport, each step of their journey fostered self-worth, confidence, and a greater sense of global belonging. Students returned home more inspired, informed, and motivated—ready to make a positive impact in their classrooms, communities, and beyond.\r\n\r\nOpportunities like this are rare. While thousands of students nationwide participate in educational tours abroad each year, access for underrepresented communities remains limited. Nationally, African American participation stands at just 6%. In Detroit, systemic barriers and financial challenges make opportunities like this even more scarce. That is why programs like the Culture Club are so vital. It makes global education accessible to underserved students and ensures that our youth— who might otherwise never travel beyond their neighborhoods, let alone internationally—are given the chance to see the world, to learn from it, and to reimagine their own futures.\r\n\r\nTravel has the power to open doors to new discoveries. It cultivates a growth mindset, sparks lifelong curiosity, and encourages a commitment to continuous learning. Research shows that globally engaged students perform at higher academic levels, think more critically, solve problems more creatively, and are more likely to succeed in college and beyond.\r\n\r\nAnd none of this would have been possible without you. Your generosity provided the supplies, safety, and support that made this incredible journey possible. Because of you, doors opened that our students once only dreamed of. Because of you, Detroit youth experienced the world in a way that will stay with them forever. \r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being an essential part of this global education initiative. This was more than a trip—it was a turning point. And together, we have truly empowered our students to see themselves as citizens of the world.","fullyFundedDate":1748750230882,"projectUrl":"project/se-goes-global-again/9317457/","projectTitle":"SE Goes Global Again","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hardy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8100023_orig.jpg?crop=800,800,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1710030073370","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sharreen-hardy"},{"teacherId":2420685,"projectId":9058648,"letterContent":"We used the pig dissection kits to learn more about the major organs and the human body systems. They talked about it with other students, teachers, and administrators to the point where the news of them getting to do a pig dissection spread like wild fire! Needless to say this activity was the highpoint of my students' experience in high school Honors Biology this school year, and was the last activity they got to complete before taking their final exams. We converted an unused office into an experience. Most students who walk into the space instantly notice the difference in the lighting. We have light strips around the perimeter, a lava lamp, chakra crystal balls, an ocean wave projector, an electric wax warmer, and a jellyfish lamp. It creates a subtle neon glow that is inviting and therapeutic. \r\nStudents can utilize the space for 15 minutes and have access to all of the wellness materials including sensory toys, books, mindfulness games, and a yoga mat.\r\nWe have uploaded pictures so you can have a \"Sneak Peak.\" \r\nOn behalf of the Southeastern High School Community, we sincerely appreciate your contribution and token(s) of love.","fullyFundedDate":1727202671317,"projectUrl":"project/our-mental-health-matters-at-shs/8805625/","projectTitle":"Our Mental Health Matters at SHS","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mitchell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9417668_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755741223070","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/se3030"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_73206","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":602,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":98,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.3,"schoolId":73206,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southeastern High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southeastern High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/detroit-public-schools-community-district/southeastern-high-school-of-technology/73206"}
