Finding resources that meet them where they are, without feeling juvenile or condescending, is genuinely hard. These did.\r\n\r\nHow we're using them: The Context Clues Task Cards have become one of our most-used tools. We've returned to them multiple times throughout the year — in partner work, small-group rotations, and as a warm-up before diving into longer texts. The cards give students a concrete, repeatable strategy: look at the sentence, find the clues, make your best inference about the word's meaning. That thinking transfers directly into the Nonfiction Comprehension Cards, where students apply the same strategy to real informational text — pausing on unfamiliar words, rereading, working it out — instead of stopping cold or skipping over. The comprehension cards have added structured practice with the kinds of questions students face on standardized assessments, and the vocabulary strategy they built with the task cards makes that work more accessible.\r\n\r\nHow students reacted: There was no fanfare — and honestly, that was the best possible sign. Students picked up the materials and got to work. For multilingual learners navigating a new language and a new school system, that kind of quiet confidence matters. The materials felt approachable enough to try and challenging enough to be worth trying.\r\n\r\nWhat's next: We're building directly on this foundation. Using the Hi-Lo Nonfiction Passages, students are now working on making inferences and drawing conclusions — moving from \"what does this word mean?\" to \"what is the author not saying directly, and how do I figure that out?\" The next step is translating those inferences into written narrative responses, putting their thinking on the page in their own words. One unexpected gift of this project was what it led me to discover along the way: while searching for a replacement for an out-of-stock item, I found The Essential 25: Teaching the Vocabulary That Makes or Breaks Student Understanding — a resource that wasn't part of my original project but that is now shaping how I teach the words students need most. The vocabulary that shows up everywhere, across every subject, that once owned unlocks so much more. Donors Choose didn't just fund materials — it funded a moment of professional discovery that will keep giving.\r\n\r\nThis project gave my students tools they'll keep using. The hands-on materials and real-life word problems have helped my students better understand what we are learning. One special moment was during a budgeting activity where students used play money and store ads to plan a small classroom party. They had to add prices, compare deals, and stay within a budget. Many of my 6th grade special education students were more confident because they could see how math connects to real life. It was wonderful to see them explaining their thinking and helping each other.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited. The colorful pages and interactive pieces made math feel less scary and more fun. Instead of feeling nervous, they were curious and ready to try. Some students even said it felt like \"real world math\" instead of regular worksheets. This helped lower their anxiety and made them more willing to participate. The headphones are essential to my group of students. Most material is read aloud to them and now they each have the opportunity to use that accommodation. A game changer!
