Students work in rotating teams to assemble different sections of each modular building—carefully following complex instructions, problem-solving together, and supporting one another when challenges arise.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened during lunch when a group of students who don't normally work together spontaneously formed a team to troubleshoot a tricky section of the Jazz Club. They spread the pieces out, assigned roles, and stayed after to complete the tasks. That kind of collaboration, ownership, and pride is exactly what this project was designed to foster.\r\n\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the LEGO modulars, their reaction was immediate and joyful. There were gasps, excited chatter, and students crowding around the boxes asking, \"Are we really building all of this?\" For many, it was the first time they had seen LEGO sets of this scale and detail.\r\n\r\nSeveral students told me they planned to start coming in more often during lunch just to help build. Others asked if they could bring friends. The materials instantly transformed the classroom atmosphere into one of excitement and anticipation.\r\n\r\nAs students continue constructing the LEGO city, it will remain a year-round community hub in our classroom. New teams will rotate in, allowing more students to contribute and leave their mark. The completed buildings will stay on display as a shared achievement and a symbol of what collaboration looks like in APUSH.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will also reflect on the skills they're practicing—teamwork, perseverance, attention to detail, and communication—and connect them to the larger themes we study in U.S. history, such as collective effort, community building, and civic participation. Thanks to our donors, this project will continue to support not just academic growth, but student well-being, belonging, and pride in their school community.","fullyFundedDate":1764508526427,"projectUrl":"project/building-community-one-brick-at-a-time/9913282/","projectTitle":"Building Community, One Brick at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jocz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1305761_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1535578880756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jocz"},{"teacherId":1193574,"projectId":9658796,"letterContent":"The extra chromebook has been a great asset to my classroom. Your contribution isn't just about books; it's about fostering a love for reading, broadening horizons, and providing essential tools for academic growth and personal discovery for our middle schoolers. \r\n\r\nThese books have directly impacted our daily learning by providing relatable characters and relevant topics that truly resonate with our young adolescents, encouraging them to explore different genres and challenging them with complex ideas. We've seen an increase in independent reading, more thoughtful classroom conversations, and even students recommending books to each other, creating a richer, more collaborative reading environment.
