During our nine-week Pick Your Own Novel Unit, all 98 of my American Literature students selected a modern, diverse book based on their own interests. Together, they read more than 100 different titles and thousands upon thousands of pages. Students who had told me they would never enjoy reading—or even that they had never read a book before—were suddenly immersed in stories, recommending books to their friends and asking what they should read next.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part was watching reading become a community experience. Students read independently and at their own pace, shared reactions with classmates, and formed small book clubs around common themes and interests. There were moments when students would stop reading mid-chapter, completely stunned by a plot twist or character, and immediately want to tell someone about it. Some students read multiple books during the unit, racing to finish one so they could begin another. The excitement has even extended beyond my classroom, with teachers and staff members checking out books for themselves. The visual support helped students feel successful while still working with grade-level content and standards.\r\n\r\nOverall, the graphic novel increased engagement, confidence, and participation in the classroom.
