When the books arrived, the students were so excited and couldn't wait to get started reading and discussing which book might win our mock Caldecott award. We first talked about the criteria for choosing a Caldecott book. Then as we read the stories we discussed and analyze each of the stories and their illustrations. It's amazing the things students notice and the great conversations we can have about good literature.\r\n\r\nThere was such a great diverse group of books that not only did it help us discuss great literature, but also learn more about the world and the cultures around us. We also had a great opportunity to work on persuasive writing. The students picked their personal favorite to win. Then had to defend that with some reasons connected to our criteria for picking a Caldecott winner. Reading and writing what a wonderful connection!\r\n\r\nThanks again for being so kind and generous in funding our project. These books not only made impressions with my students this year, but the books will also be around for students in the years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1733225442792,"projectUrl":"project/the-caldecott-experience/8970924/","projectTitle":"The Caldecott Experience","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Allgor","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3008564"},{"teacherId":8190838,"projectId":8969447,"letterContent":"Your generous contribution to our Donors Choose initiative has profoundly impacted our classroom. With your support, our students have had the opportunity to dive into 25 new stories and discover the art of creating award-winning illustrations.\r\n\r\nThey have learned valuable techniques and explored various materials, understanding how these elements enhance storytelling, just as much as the written words. By analyzing each story and illustration, students gained the skills to choose an overall class winner, as well as some runners-up. \r\n\r\nStudents then applied their newfound knowledge to compose persuasive essays, drawing on examples from the illustrations. My students had the greatest month learning about and reading through all 25 of these fantastic children's picture books. \r\nThe Caldecott award is a very prestigious award and being able to spend the time diving into the criteria the judges use while having these books in front of us, was such a valuable month's worth of lessons. So many of these books discuss social change, cultural traditions, history of places around the world, or are just plain fun! We loved discussing them and deciding why these books were Caldecott contenders. \r\nWe so appreciate you being willing to lend a hand and help us take part in these awesome and powerful discussions. My second graders are absolutely thrilled with their incredible collection of literature! They had a fantastic time learning about the Caldecott Award while exploring these amazing contenders. They're loving every moment of reading these fantastic texts, and we're also incorporating them into our daily #bookaday read-aloud sessions!\r\n\r\nThese books are not only providing valuable character-building lessons but also sparking so many meaningful discussions.
