Each year, the Caldecott Award Committee gets together to talk about the best picture books of the year. The committee doesn't just focus on the writing of the stories; the committee also considers the pictures and how they help tell the story. Each year, one book is selected as the Caldecott Medal Winner. Several other books are selected as Caldecott Honor Winners. There is no list of books that the committee works from. Instead, members simply suggest books illustrated by American illustrators that have been published during the current year. The committee analyzes the illustrations in the books and votes on who will be the winner according to the Caldecott criteria. There is no pre-made list of books that the committee chooses from, and no one knows for sure which books will end up winning or getting honors. Across the country, classrooms create lists of possible contenders for the award. This year we have narrowed down our class list of Caldecott contenders to these special books. We can't thank you enough for any donation to our Caldecott book study!
