As soon as I placed them down (one in our library space and one at the front of our classroom), I saw how quickly they transformed our classroom into a welcoming space for young learners.\r\n\r\nAs a first-year teacher, I had so many hopes for what our learning community could become. While our year was ultimately cut short by the pandemic, the time we shared in our classroom was incredibly meaningful—from morning meetings and read-alouds on our new rug to science experiments and math lessons, we had an amazing time together.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited the first time we used the rug at the front of our classroom. They needed a little help at first learning how to transition safely from their desks to the rug, but once they got the hang of it, they loved our rug space for both whole-group learning and independent work.\r\n\r\nWe used our rugs every day for morning meetings, read-alouds, and group discussions, as well as a comfortable space for independent reading and choosing new books in our classroom library. These moments became some of the most important parts of our day because they helped students feel seen, connected, and ready to learn. Though I have since moved to a new school, it was a difficult transition to leave my first school site.
