Sometimes it's hard for all of the children to share, so it helps to have choices. We have over 100 first grade students using the various sports equipment on the playground. Our boys love tossing footballs into the target nets and kickball has become a new favorite game because now we have real bases! They are also using the soccer nets and my classroom started doing yoga! It's been a great movement break for the kids between instruction. We use them almost everyday. They come in handy for math and spelling activities and the hard surface allows them to work on the floor as well. \r\n\r\nThis year my students are very interested in writing stories. We use the folders to store our work. They are so much more sturdy than the paper folders and the the metal prong inserts allow me to put word list and editing sheets inside. We start our Economics unit next month. After learning about goods, services, producers and consumers, we will create a first grade market. Students will be able to pair up and create a little storefront. Last year we had a hat store, sunglass store, nail salon, paper airplane store, lemonade stand, and jewelry store. Unfortunately the students don't get a lot of open ended activities to be creative. We will use play money so they can buy and sell their goods and services. This project is one of the highlights of the year. To keep my students engaged, it helps to keep them writing on dry erase boards with markers. What kid doesn't like markers?!
