Our students come from extreme poverty. Our school offers free breakfast, lunch and a healthy snack everyday. Most students are being raised by a grandparent or a single parent, which is usually the mom. Our population is very transient with some students attending more than 2 schools in the year. Many of our students come from neighborhoods with high crime and poor living conditions. Social skills are very hard for our kindergartners to learn. This is usually their first year ever in school. Based on early assessments most of our students know less than 5 letters and cannot write their name. Counting is also very difficult for them. My students learn best with lots of hands on activities and many brain breaks. I spend a lot of time teaching daily manners, how to interact with our peers by communicating and listening. My goal is for my students to gain a love for learning and to be a good citizen.
