Transitioning to longer chapter books helped my students build reading stamina. Instead of finishing a book in one sitting, they learned the discipline of tracking a plot, remembering characters across multiple chapters, and managing a longer narrative arc.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looked like a cozy, focused community. During independent reading time, students scattered across the room, completely absorbed in their books. There is a quiet, joyful buzz when someone finishes a chapter and immediately wants to whisper a prediction to their neighbor.\r\n\r\nI have a few students who used to struggle to find a book that could hold their attention for more than a few minutes. Having a fresh, modern selection of chapter books completely changed that. One student in particular discovered a new favorite series from this project and went from avoiding reading time to begging for 'just five more minutes' to finish a chapter.","fullyFundedDate":1773873721880,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-love-of-reading-through-third/9948222/","projectTitle":"Building a Love of Reading Through Third Grade Novel Studies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mahlmeister","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3030520_orig.jpg?crop=1500,1500,x0,y155&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661198140416","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3030520"},{"teacherId":8362269,"projectId":10261916,"letterContent":"My students have been using the new flexible seating options throughout our small group instruction, independent work time, and collaborative activities. Because of your support, my students now have access to sensory tables and materials that are already making a powerful impact on their ability to regulate, engage, and learn throughout the day.\r\n\r\nThe moment I introduced the sensory tables, the excitement was immediate. Students who often struggle to stay regulated were drawn in right away—exploring, smiling, and engaging in ways that felt safe and natural to them. One moment that stood out was watching a student who typically has difficulty remaining in a group setting independently engage with the sensory materials for an extended period of time, calmly and successfully. That moment alone showed just how impactful these resources are.\r\n\r\nI am now using the sensory tables daily as part of both structured learning and proactive regulation. During academic rotations, students are incorporating sensory play into early math and literacy activities—scooping, sorting, counting, and building fine motor skills in a hands-on, meaningful way. I am also using these materials proactively to support regulation before behaviors escalate, which has already led to smoother transitions and increased engagement throughout the day.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, I am building a classroom environment where my students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. My next steps are to continue embedding these sensory experiences into academic instruction while increasing student independence and participation in group activities. These materials are not just tools—they are opening doors for my students to access their education in ways that truly meet their needs.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and for helping create a space where they can regulate, focus, and learn.","fullyFundedDate":1775777408822,"projectUrl":"project/regulate-focus-learn-sensory-based-ac/10119306/","projectTitle":"Regulate, Focus, Learn: Sensory-Based Academic Stations for K–1","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Revert","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10441808_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y84&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1775785574837","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10441808"},{"teacherId":8655883,"projectId":10133471,"letterContent":"I want to express my deepest gratitude for your incredible generosity. By providing high-quality headphones for our iPads and durable take-home folders, you haven't just bought \"stuff\" for our classroom—you've fundamentally changed how my first graders interact with their daily learning. In a busy classroom of six- and seven-year-olds, these tools are the bridge between a noisy room and a focused mind.\r\n\r\nWhile many of us use technology for entertainment, in our classroom, the iPads (now paired with your headphones) serve as personalized tutors. My students use them to access adaptive literacy programs that listen to them read and provide immediate feedback. Before your gift, the \"noise bleed\" from multiple tablets made it nearly impossible for children to hear the subtle phonetic differences between sounds like \"sh\" and \"ch.\" Now, my students are immersed in their own private \"learning bubbles.\" They can hear every phoneme clearly, which has led to a noticeable jump in their reading confidence and decoding accuracy.\r\n\r\nThe excitement in the room when I brought out the new headphones was palpable! For a first grader, there is something incredibly empowering about having their own professional-looking gear; it makes them feel like \"serious students.\" However, the most heartwarming impact has been on my English Language Learners and students with sensory sensitivities. One student, who used to become overwhelmed by the ambient classroom chatter, now puts on their headphones and visibly relaxes, finally able to focus on their math fluency games without distraction.\r\n\r\nThe take-home folders have been equally transformative. In Arizona, we place a heavy emphasis on the \"Move On When Reading\" initiative, which requires a strong school-to-home connection. These folders have become our \"command center.\" Because they are sturdy and organized, my students take immense pride in transporting their \"Star Work\" and nightly reading logs back and forth. It has taught them a sense of responsibility and ensured that the vital practice they do at home is never lost in the bottom of a backpack.
