My students got cards describing a family that they would embody for the lesson. They are learning how to write and solve algebraic equations. They used the information given on their family card to write an equation showing how many hours they would need to work in order to afford the apartments they wanted for their family. I adapted activities to include housing prices in our neighborhood and got to have some rich discussions where students connected the situations they read to their lived experience.\r\n\r\nDuring this lesson, I saw my students get so much more comfortable with algebra than they ever had been before this year. They loved talking to their classmates and comparing experiences.
