The kids are now using CAD software to design custom parts from scratch. They've learned how to choose the right materials for the job, such as using tough ABS filament for the heavy-duty structural parts you see on the robot, durable PETG for components that need extra strength, and multi-color PLA to make team number plates for the robot. Some of the kids have really taken off with researching and trying new things; it is a lot of fun to watch.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis printer has also taken their problem-solving and creativity to a whole new level. For example they noticed too much slop in our intake mechanism. They used CAD to model exact replicas of our standard extruded aluminum pieces, but printed them slightly thicker out of PETG to tighten up the fit. Testing a custom solution like that with a quick print and tweaking the design taught them that failure is just a normal part of prototyping. The confidence and critical thinking skills they are building during our after-school sessions will stick with them long after this robotics season is over. When we began this project, our hope was that students in our programs would learn skills that help them transition into the community. We wanted them to practice following multi-step directions, learning new tasks in an unfamiliar setting, and doing so in a place where mistakes are welcomed and learning is safe.\r\nThis gift made that hope a reality. Watching the students discover their own abilities was a joy. Some mornings it was hard to decide who would help with the coffee cart because so many students wanted to take part—and taste the items brought in! Those friendly competitions to be chosen were a delight to see.\r\nStudents who had difficulty making coffee still contributed in meaningful ways: stocking shelves, prepping cups and supplies, delivering orders, sampling new products, making friends, and learning from their peers. Every student found a role and gained confidence.\r\nYour generosity exceeded our expectations and made a lasting difference.
