Students took pride in helping keep our area clean, and it fostered a shared sense of responsibility and respect for the learning environment.\r\n\r\nThe snacks, in particular, became a small ice breaking tool for building trust with our students. Many students come to class after missing lunch or rushing between classes, so having snacks available helped them refocus and feel cared for. It was heartwarming to see students relax, grab a snack, and engage more openly in one-on-one conversations.\r\n\r\nWe also used the snacks during college application workshops and field trips, which kept energy levels up and students motivated. During those long sessions, a quick snack break became a \"pick-me-up\" moment that helped everyone stay positive and productive. These resources supported not just physical needs, but also emotional well-being, reinforcing that our classroom is a safe and supportive space.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials—especially the snacks and small figurine toys—their reactions were overwhelmingly positive. Many students who normally just passed by began stopping into our office more frequently. The sight of the snacks created an immediate sense of comfort and welcome, showing them that this was a space where their needs were understood and cared for. Some students who we rarely saw before started coming in, initially just to grab a quick snack, but soon they began staying longer to chat or ask questions.\r\n\r\nThe addition of the figurine toys also sparked curiosity and laughter, helping to break the ice and make the environment feel more relaxed. These simple resources transformed our space into a more inviting and supportive place. Students felt seen, valued, and encouraged to connect—not just with the materials, but with us and each other.\r\n\r\nWe plan to continue finding new ways to motivate and support our students. The project has helped create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable visiting our office without fear or hesitation. Even though the snacks are gone, the impact remains—students now know our team, trust us, and regularly stop by to ask questions or seek guidance. Our next step is to build on these connections by introducing more interactive activities, workshops, and resources that promote academic growth and emotional well-being. Each time I get a new project funded, I am truly amazed by the generosity of friends, family, and strangers. Without you, my students' access to engaging, high-quality books would be woefully limited. \r\n\r\nAlthough I was SO excited to receive physical copies of La Mano del Destino, we ran into a bit of an issue with the vendor, so I actually had to select new titles. As it turns out, my students were thrilled with this! While they had enjoyed that book, they shared with me that they would have rather had physical copies of Anya's Ghost, which we also had read as an ebook. So, what I had interpreted as a huge setback turned out to be a blessing; I ordered a class set of Anya's Ghost (since my students loved that one), Persepolis (they wanted a nonfiction text), and Miles Morales (EVERYONE was pumped for that one).\r\n\r\nIt was so fun getting to choose new titles with the help of my current students, who are now envious of all of my future students who will get to read these titles. I am so grateful to each any every one of you who contributed to this project. I use these materials in two ways. First, if a student is experiencing stress from their personal lives that bubbles up in the classroom, I offer them choice-- do they need 10 minutes to color and decompress? Would a stress ball help? I also offer the supplies to the whole class on Fridays as an optional activity. Finally, in each class, we have a class DJ. They collect lists of songs from the entire class and make a playlist. We use the playlist during independent work time. \r\n\r\nStudents very much enjoy the materials. They like having choice in what they color and in selecting a stress ball/squishy. The speaker is also very popular-- they love hearing their favorite song and sharing it with their peers!
