We are a middle school in an large urban environment. Many of my students are English-Language Learners. I also have a high percentage of Special Education students and students performing below grade level. Hands-on activities keep them engaged and help them stay focused in the classroom. My students get excited when it's a "lab" day. They become actively involved in the scientific process, including making mistakes and learning from them. They learn more when they can try out concepts for themselves, instead of just reading about them or watching a demonstration. Recently, our school was co-located with another school. That school now has the science lab. I am trying to re-build a lab in a room that has not been a lab for over 10 years. We opened this year discussing lab safety procedures and the importance of lab safety. Yet, I don't have a completely safe way to sanitize the goggles we will be frequently using, especially in 8th grade science.
