They have been using the same technology that professional scientists have used to create life-saving insulin.\r\n\r\nOur young scientists were able to insert DNA from the red sea anemone into E. Coli DNA to give it a new trait. They learned about plasmids, restriction enzymes and ligase before using them to transform bacteria. Then, they were able to purify the Red Fluorescent Protein that they engineered the bacteria to make. \r\n\r\nThey were able to see their results clearly with your help! With the transilluminator you donated students were able to capture the glow of the bacteria that they genetically engineered and also see the results of the protein purification of that bacteria. The models provide a quick way to learn about and reinforce their knowledge of the Law of Conservation of Mass. The model sets help the students by providing a more visual and concrete way to learn about some of these difficult and abstract topics. In essence, the molecules they build help them better interact with the lesson being taught.
