My students come from a low income inner-city school environment. Many enter my class having not experienced science. When I ask them, "What do you remember about previous science classes?", the response I usually get in return is "book work" and "worksheets". I find this disheartening. When I probe a bit more, the students begin to reveal projects or demos that they remember. It's funny, because this is what I remember the most from my days as a student. So I try to provide this to my students as often as I can because I know that these are the things they will remember most from my class. And of course, I hope to teach them chemistry while I am at it.
