Because of your generosity, my students are able to truly regulate before learning in a space that honors who they are and supports everything they will become. This is my third year teaching, and as a life skills teacher, I have students who have been with me all three years. In a small classroom with no adapted or regulating materials, my students would often engage in unsafe behaviors, become dysregulated and have to leave the room, losing learning opportunities themselves but also removing staff from the room, which affects the learning and regulation of all students in the room. Now, if a student becomes dysregulated or has high sensory needs during a structured time such as morning meeting, stations etc, I watch them become weightless for a moment on the swing, jump off the trampoline and roll and bounce into the crash pad, hide inside the canopy and cozy up on the floor for instruction in all our pillows. To see the difference having access to sensory supports like the swing and crash pad has made for their school experience, in their ability to attend to task and make meaning out of instructional opportunities, to see the joy and peace they feel in our new classroom has been a reward I wish I could share with you. Empowering our teeniest most vulnerable community members to meet their sensory and gross motor needs without losing any instructional or social time is truly something that I can never thank you enough for. Using a video camera connected to the classroom screen, I am now able to clearly model each step of a lesson while students watch in real time. This has made demonstrations much easier for all students to see, especially during detailed drawing lessons where small techniques are important. When students first saw the new setup, they were excited and immediately more engaged because they could finally see every part of the artistic process clearly from their seats.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was during a drawing lesson when I demonstrated shading and blending techniques under the camera. Students were able to closely follow each step projected on the screen, and many commented that it helped them understand the process better than before. The drawing desk has helped improve focus, participation, and confidence because students can now watch demonstrations without crowding around a table or missing important details. It has also allowed me to slow down and explain techniques more effectively while keeping the entire class involved.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, the drawing desk will continue to support lessons in painting, perspective drawing, sculpture planning, and mixed media projects. Students are becoming more independent and successful because they can clearly observe the artistic process from beginning to end. Students are absolutely loving the new furniture! My favorite outcome has been how the \"feel\" of our classroom has changed. The furniture is without a doubt their favorite spot in our space! To quote one of my students, \"I really love when it's time to free read on our comfy furniture! It's so comfortable and cozy and reminds me of my home!\" Another student remarked, \"My favorite part of the day is when I can read my favorite books and hold the dogs (weighted reading buddies) on my lap.\"\r\nWhen all of our boxes began arriving, as a class, we would unbox everything together. Students were then able to \"test\" the furniture and report to the class what they thought. Overwhelmingly, students gave each cushion, each chair, each lounge pillow an A+ in comfort! It has warmed my heart to hear students give reminders to each other to respect the furniture. The moment those boxes started arriving, my students were so excited to see what was in them. We had to open them immediately! My students were so excited to see all of the sensory regulation tools and more than that, they couldn't wait to use them! \r\n\r\nThe first item we implemented was a weighted compression vest for one of my second grade friends. He had tried a weighted vest before and also a compression vest, but when he put on this weighted compression vest, he was so excited (as you will see in the picture). He kept saying, \"This is so nice.\" This item has helped him regulate his body during instruction, especially during small group when he is working so hard on his own level. \r\n\r\nThe second item we got a chance to use immediately were the chew necklaces. One of my Kindergarten friends enjoys eating glue sticks, so I knew a chew necklace would be a great replacement item for her. She chose the donut necklace and has worn it every day since. \r\n\r\nMy students are eager to come to small group and select sensory seating. Sometimes they enjoy sitting in a leaf chair on the floor or rocking in a rocking chair at the table. Their eyes and face were filled with exciting anticipation as I opened one of the boxes and then showed them what was inside. I told them that each of them would be able to have their own board to work with when we do our UFLI lessons... no sharing with these! They were screaming and jumping!!! Oh the joys of five and six year olds.😊❤️\r\nWe use these magnetic boards every other day to go along with our UFLI lessons. When I tell them it is time to get our their magnetic boards they are super excited to get them out. One girl told me the other day, \"I just love when we get to get these boards out!\" That makes my heart so happy when they enjoy learning to read!\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart. They're finding all sorts of things they have in common with their peers that they would have never known had they not had the time to sit and play together. New friendships are being made.\r\nIn addition, students are learning to persevere. At the beginning of the year, I had so many students give up when things didn't go their way or they didn't know how to do things. They are learning to ask questions and give themselves time to learn without the frustrations taking over.\r\nFinally, my students are learning to take care of materials. At the beginning of this year, we lost a lot of supplies and didn't seem to care about items. Since the board games have been delivered, students are taking better care of materials knowing that they won't have games to play without the pieces.
