I returned to school in August feeling confident that we have the materials we need to prepare for our Fall Festival and Christmas Concert. In their first music class of the year, 3rd grade students played the new tambourines and sang \"I'm So Glad I'm Here.\" This year, not one student used a tambourine held together by duct tape. It was an awesome class. When they held their tambourines in \"rest position\" while waiting to play, one boy wore his instrument like a hat, and then everyone else wanted to try it, too. Everyone was laughing and smiling. It was just the kind of moment that opens kids up to making music together, and shows them that it's ok to be silly and make mistakes together, too. We make our best music when we have fun together like that.\r\n\t\r\nMy Kindergarten students will soon play the new jingle bells for the first time! I can't wait to see them try them out. The jingle bells will be some of the first instruments they play in music class. Every year Kindergarten plays jingle bells in the Christmas Concert–it's the sound that puts a little extra magic in the holiday season! This year for the first time all Kindergarten students will play jingle bells that aren't held together by pipe cleaners. It makes me even more excited for all the practicing that we'll do over the next few months. \r\n\r\nTruly, everything that you helped provide through this project will enhance our school year–both the basic supplies like sharpies and batteries, and new instruments to replace broken ones. I hope you and your families are well as this year's holiday season begins. Now they know that when they come to music class, fidgets, noise-cancelling headphones, and yoga mats are available to them if their nervous systems become overwhelmed and they need a break. It was especially helpful for the students to have these resources while we rehearsed for our Christmas concert. The holiday season can already be a stressful time, and a big performance coming up adds to that stress. It was easy to give a visibly stressed student a fidget or pair of headphones while continuing to rehearse with the rest of the students. After this most students were able to refocus and rejoin the class. \r\n\r\nMy fourth-grade classes are especially impacted by the new materials. They are learning how to play recorders, and their classes are scheduled at the very end of the school day when they are tired. They are visibly excited to get fidgets and headphones when they come in the room, and no longer dread the loud noises that beginning recorder players inevitably make. They know relief is available for them, and they stay on track to learn. \r\n\r\nThanks again for helping my students and me.
