I keep the snacks in a cabinet that students know they can quietly access if they need something during class, and within the first few days I heard more than one student say, \"Wait... this is really for us?\" That moment of surprise says a lot. For some of my students, this is the only consistent food they will have between lunch and the time they finally get home, especially for students who stay late for activities or transportation.\r\n\r\nYour support has made a difference in ways that are both simple and powerful. Students grab a granola bar or a bag of chips before settling into their work, and that small moment often shifts the energy of the room. Instead of putting their heads down or struggling to focus, they are able to stay engaged in the lesson. Lately, that focus has been especially important because many of our juniors have been working hard to prepare for the ACT. We've spent time practicing reading strategies, working through passages together, and building stamina for the kind of sustained concentration that the test demands. Having food available has helped students stay present during those longer practice sessions and after-school study time. It may seem small, but when a student isn't distracted by hunger, they can actually give their attention to the work in front of them.\r\n\r\nMore than anything, the snacks help create a classroom environment where students feel like their needs matter. Over time, that sense of care builds trust. Students stay after class to finish assignments, ask questions they might have kept to themselves, and push themselves a little harder during discussions and writing activities.\r\n\r\nAs we continue preparing for the ACT and move deeper into our reading and writing units this semester, these resources will keep supporting students during longer work periods and collaborative projects. We use the breathing lights and calming tools daily during check-ins and after stressful moments to help students reset and refocus. One memorable moment was watching students independently choose the zen garden and breathing tools after a difficult morning, helping each other calm down and return ready to learn. The emotion stamps have also helped students express feelings they sometimes struggle to put into words.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious. Many shared that they had never had access to calming tools like these at school before, and they immediately began exploring how to use them during group circles and independent work time.\r\n\r\nNext, we are continuing lessons focused on emotional regulation, healthy decision-making, and relationship-building. Students are learning how to recognize stress signals and choose calming strategies before conflicts or classroom disruptions happen.
