Through graphic novels, nonfiction, mythology, and historical fiction, students are strengthening important 6th grade ELA skills such as comprehension, inference, discussion, and citing evidence while learning about Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Pompeii.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom includes independent reading, small-group discussions, and literature circles. I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii has been a favorite among reluctant readers, while books like The Golden Goblet, Ra the Mighty, and Greeking Out have sparked curiosity and thoughtful comparisons across cultures. These books have helped students see reading as an exciting adventure and have made history feel real and memorable. The timing of your gift could not have been more perfect; The Sea of Monsters arrived just as we were finishing The Lightning Thief, and the excitement in the room was unforgettable. Students were genuinely thrilled to continue Percy's journey without delay, and that momentum carried directly into deeper engagement, richer discussions, and a stronger love of reading. They also had the chance to preview the other new books, and it sparked so much curiosity! Students were buzzing about what they might read next and eagerly making connections between texts.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and collaborative. Students discuss themes, track character development, and analyze how challenges shape a hero's journey. These new books allow us to practice key skills like inference, vocabulary in context, and citing textual evidence - all while students feel invested in the stories. \r\n\r\nSeveral students, in particular, have truly come alive through these new texts. I've seen reluctant readers become confident participants, and students who struggled with focus become deeply absorbed in the stories. One student who often finds it difficult to complete assignments has been proudly keeping up with the reading and contributing thoughtful ideas during discussions. They've even become a fun motivator for getting work done!\r\n\r\nThe books you helped fund have been a big hit, too. Students are reading them eagerly and sharing great reviews with each other. It's been wonderful to see their excitement about stories they can relate to.\r\n\r\nHaving the ability to offer my students snacks, current and engaging books, and flexible seating has made such a positive difference in our classroom.
