I divide our semester into thirds: the first third is devoted to independent reading. Students pick their own books and we read at least 10 minutes a day in class. The students keep a diary, adding two sentences about what they are thinking about their books at the end of each reading session. At the end of the grading period, they pick one of three projects to demonstrate their understanding of what they read. \r\n\r\nThis set up has allowed a relaxed, fun reading environment. You would LOVE eavesdropping on their organic conversations as they discuss stories and authors they love (or don't) and how they are developing their own identities for and love of reading.\r\n\r\nThis kind of learning is so much easier when we have a rich collection of diverse, relevant, and engaging books.
