Students with autism are learning valuable life skills by managing the snack shop, including organizing, inventorying items, and interacting with peers during purchases. A particularly meaningful moment has been watching our students proudly take on their roles, greet others, and assist with snack choices—skills they are actively working to generalize beyond our self-contained classroom.\r\n\r\nWhen the snacks first arrived, the excitement was immediate across all students in the program. Having a variety of snack options—especially ones they helped request and vote for—made the experience feel rewarding and motivating. Students earning access to the snack shop were thrilled to have meaningful choices, which has increased positive behavior and engagement throughout the day. The anticipation of earning a preferred snack has helped reinforce expectations in a positive and encouraging way.\r\n\r\nBecause of our donors, the next steps for our students include continuing to build independence and confidence as they take greater ownership of the snack shop operations. We will expand lessons around shop keeping skills, kitchen safety, communication, and social interaction while fostering inclusive peer connections. This project has created a beautiful opportunity for students who are typically self-contained to interact with peers they might not otherwise meet, while also helping others learn about autism through compassion, patience, and understanding. We are currently using the new materials to build mini ecosystems, allowing students to explore how living and nonliving factors interact in a closed environment. One of my favorite classroom moments was watching students gather around their terrariums, excitedly pointing out new plant growth and debating why certain organisms were thriving more than others. Their curiosity filled the room.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue monitoring their ecosystems over the next few weeks. They will collect data, journal observations, and evaluate how changes in moisture, light, and plant selection impact the balance within their terrariums. This project is setting the stage for upcoming lessons on energy flow and environmental stability, and it's already inspiring many students to think about real-world careers in biology and environmental science.\r\n\r\nThank you again for opening the door to such meaningful, hands-on learning.
