Because of you, my kindergarten students now have access to a rich collection of social–emotional learning books that truly reflect who they are and what they experience every day.\r\n\r\nThese books are already doing exactly what I hoped they would:\r\n\r\n✨ Helping my students see themselves and their families in the stories we read\r\n\r\n✨ Giving them language to talk about their feelings\r\n\r\n✨ Supporting them as they learn empathy, problem-solving, and self-regulation\r\n\r\n✨ Creating a classroom community where every child feels understood and valued\r\n\r\n\r\nMany of my students are just beginning their school journey. For some, these stories are the first time they've seen characters who look like them, think like them, or face challenges similar to their own. The excitement on their faces when they connect with a character or proudly say, \"That's like me!\" has been incredible to witness.\r\n\r\n\r\nWe use these books during morning meetings, read-alouds, and small-group lessons. They've sparked thoughtful conversations about kindness, calming down when we feel big emotions, making friends, and noticing the feelings of others. The impact is already showing in the way students interact with each other—using words from the books, trying new strategies, and cheering each other on.\r\n\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped me create a safe, joyful, and inclusive space where students can grow not just academically, but emotionally. I am so grateful for your belief in my classroom and for giving my young learners the tools to better understand themselves and each other.\r\n\r\n\r\nThank you for making such a meaningful difference.","fullyFundedDate":1758899153610,"projectUrl":"project/stories-that-look-like-us-building-empa/9537012/","projectTitle":"Stories That Look Like Us: Building Empathy Through Representation","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mayo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7180633_orig.jpg?crop=739,739,x29,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1669602517119","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7180633"},{"teacherId":8099925,"projectId":9670850,"letterContent":"We want to thank you for these resources. The books you helped provide have opened new doors for my students—not just in literacy skills, but in imagination, empathy, and joy.\r\n\r\nWith these new texts, we've been diving into essential reading strategies like making predictions, identifying main ideas, and drawing inferences. We're also working on building vocabulary and fluency through repeated readings and partner discussions. It's been incredible to see how much more confident my students are becoming as readers and thinkers.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is now one of the most exciting parts of the day. Students eagerly grab their favorite titles, curl up in cozy corners, and get lost in stories. We've also introduced book talks and reading buddies, giving students the chance to share what they've learned and why they love what they're reading.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular—who previously struggled to engage with books—is now completely hooked on a graphic novel from the collection. He now chooses to read during his free time and even volunteers to read aloud to the class. Another student, who is learning English as a second language, has found comfort and confidence in our bilingual titles, proudly sharing connections to her own life.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than put books on our shelves. Thanks to your support, we received 16 pairs of tap shoes, which have been an absolute game-changer for our students. These shoes have brought an exciting new rhythm and energy to our program and allowed us to explore an entirely new style of dance.\r\n\r\nOn December 19th, our students had the privilege of showcasing their hard work in a performance of Sammy Davis Jr.'s Candyman. The tapping sounds of their synchronized steps echoed throughout the auditorium, filling the space with joy and excitement. The students beamed with pride as they performed in front of their families and peers. It was a huge success, and many parents commented on how much they enjoyed seeing their children light up on stage. Your donation made this possible and allowed us to create such a memorable moment for our school community.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the tap shoes, their excitement was palpable. It was their first time trying on tap shoes, and their laughter and amazement as they experimented with the sounds their feet could create were priceless. We've been using the tap shoes to learn fundamental tap steps, explore rhythms, and even discuss the cultural and historical significance of tap dance. Moving forward, we plan to integrate tap routines into our spring showcase, giving students another opportunity to shine. The confidence, discipline, and joy they've gained through this project are invaluable, and it's all thanks to your support.\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping to inspire and empower the next generation of dancers.","fullyFundedDate":1725211301637,"projectUrl":"project/tap-into-success-equipping-young-dance/8682996/","projectTitle":"\"Tap Into Success: Equipping Young Dancers With Tap Shoes\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Moreland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5178879_orig.jpg?crop=1283,1283,x0,y307&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724193403330","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5178879"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_495","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":449,"numTeachers":60,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"7.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.6,"schoolId":495,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 49 Willis Avenue on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 49 Willis Avenue","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-49-willis-avenue/495"}
