Whether it is sensory mats or putty, these items have become an integral part of our day. They provide invaluable support to students who need that little extra help to regulate their emotions, calm down, or satisfy a need for stimulation. They are readily available to students who I encourage to access them whenever they feel they need to. This has helped them, and me, to support their independent use and application. The bright colors and myriad textures of the putty and mats have become particular favorites for all of my students. \r\n Many of my students struggle with limited attention, and often their little bodies are constantly in motion. This makes focusing on learning tasks particularly challenging. These materials help them release some of this energy and offer options that typical fidget toys do not.\r\n The visual schedule materials have been instrumental in providing several students with clear pictures of our daily schedule as well as reward options that they can earn for their work and behavior successes. They are portable and interchangeable which makes it possible that each schedule can be adapted to a particular student's needs. This further supports independence and ultimately makes them more successful. These materials are so very appreciated.","fullyFundedDate":1757126998435,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-materials-support-refocusing/9658660/","projectTitle":"Sensory Materials Support Refocusing","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. DeMartino","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2278301_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1525652069504","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mdemartino"},{"teacherId":5265748,"projectId":9656959,"letterContent":"I am truly grateful for the generous support that made this project possible. The rolling whiteboards and markers have already begun to make a meaningful difference in our AVID classroom. My students are at their best when they can work together, talk through their thinking, and learn from one another, and these tools have given them a fresh, engaging way to do exactly that.\r\n\r\nWith the new whiteboards, students are able to gather in small groups, map out their ideas, and visually explain their problem-solving steps. I've seen quieter students become more confident as they take the lead in illustrating their thoughts, and groups who once struggled to communicate are now collaborating more naturally. The boards have also helped students identify where they're getting stuck and work together to find solutions, which has strengthened both their understanding and their teamwork. They were so excited to explore the counting pegs and playdough activities, and it was incredible to watch them turn math time into hands-on, joyful learning. We used the playdough counting sets to practice number recognition and fine motor skills, and my English Language Learners especially loved using the playdough to \"build\" numbers and shapes while saying the words out loud it made learning both visual and tactile.\r\n\r\nDuring our Halloween-themed reading time, the students eagerly gathered around to read our new books. They pointed to pictures, practiced new vocabulary, and even acted out parts of the stories. It was such a wonderful moment to see how these resources encouraged creativity, language development, and collaboration.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll continue using the math toys during small-group rotations to strengthen counting and problem-solving skills, and we'll incorporate themed books into our literacy centers to keep language learning fun and engaging. Your support has made a tremendous difference in how our students learn, explore, and create every day.\r\nMany people use technology at home for communication, entertainment, and organization—but in our classroom, the iPad has become a powerful learning tool. Students are using it to research topics, practice reading and math skills through interactive apps, and even create their own digital presentations. The iPad has opened up new ways for students to engage with lessons, allowing them to move at their own pace and explore subjects that spark their curiosity.\r\nWhat excites the students most about the iPad is the opportunity to learn through hands-on interaction. Whether it's exploring virtual science experiments, reading interactive e-books, or using art apps to illustrate their stories, the iPad makes learning feel like an adventure. It has turned lessons that were once paper-based into dynamic, engaging experiences.\r\nSome students have especially thrived with this new technology. One student who often struggled with writing has discovered a love for storytelling through digital drawing and voice recording. Another student who is shy about participating in group discussions now confidently shares their ideas through multimedia projects. The iPad has truly given every student a voice and a chance to shine in their own way.\r\nBecause of your kindness, our classroom is more creative, connected, and confident than ever before. These stories have sparked laughter, curiosity, and lively discussions about friendship, courage, and creativity.\r\nYour donation didn't just buy books — it built confidence in young readers. My first year teaching in public school was incredibly challenging, but now that I've had time to reflect, I am truly so grateful. This year was an amazing experience, and my students and I appreciated the new resources more than I can say.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generous support, I was able to open a brand-new learning center a few months into the school year, the kitchen! It was an absolute hit with the kids. They were so excited and eager to explore it. It quickly became a favorite space where they could engage in collaborative play, practice new vocabulary, and, most importantly, have fun while learning.\r\n\r\nAt first, we used the kitchen center to focus on social skills: taking turns, using complete sentences, asking questions, and building conversations. It was incredible to see how quickly they picked up on this through play. Later, we integrated our curriculum into the center. During a lesson on holidays, we created a chart with labeled pictures of holidays the students celebrate. Some students used the chart for spelling support, while others sounded out the names of their favorite holidays on slips of paper before entering the kitchen, setting the scene for their play.\r\n\r\nAs their literacy skills grew, I added a blank menu template. They chose four items, spelled and illustrated each one, and then used them during play. It was the perfect example of how play and learning go hand in hand.\r\n\r\nThe dry-erase pockets were a huge hit as well! They allowed students to play reusable games in the math and writing centers, keeping activities fun and engaging. The Lakeshore caddies helped us stay organized by table color, and the students took pride in being responsible for their materials.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies first arrived, my students were in complete shock. They couldn't believe this incredible kitchen was for them! Their excitement was contagious, and the center remained the most popular spot in the classroom for months.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, my goal is to keep building on what we've started, continuing to grow our centers, add more color and vibrancy to our room, and create a classroom where every student feels welcome, successful, and excited to learn.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. Your support has had a real, lasting impact.","fullyFundedDate":1729002461496,"projectUrl":"project/cooking-up-social-skills-kitchen-playse/8716836/","projectTitle":"Cooking up Social Skills: Kitchen Playset for Cooperative Play","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lee","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9714945_orig.png?crop=449,449,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728348764728","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9714945"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_927","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":527,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":30,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":31,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"9.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.5,"schoolId":927,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about PS 164 Queens Valley on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"PS 164 Queens Valley","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ps-164-queens-valley/927"}
