My current classroom library is very limited. I have been at my school for 11 years and it has never been updated. Each year I try my best to buy engaging literature for my kids but it is not enough for all of my diverse 63 students. The kids love the books that I purchase for them, but when they are done reading those books, all that’s left is our very limited selection. When it is time to read independently, I see how disengaged they are at times. They are not able to identify with the books in my library. Therefore, I would love to offer my students literature in which they can see themselves; their knowledge, experiences, and identity. This library will help me give my kids quality instruction and the necessary tools to bridge the literacy gap. As a class we will come together and realize that our differences are strengths. My students will be able to relate lesson content to their own backgrounds.
