All of my students are now engaged and loving reading due to the wide selection of books I have in my library. \r\n\r\nMy Spanish-speaking students feel so connected to the books that they actually race upstairs to get to them first. Students are asking to come up during lunch just to have a chance to read. We do not have a lot of independent time for reading, but students know as soon as they finish their work they're able to pick up a book and read which has helped tremendously with getting independent work done in a timely manner. \r\n\r\nThe graphic novel section has engaged my struggling readers by allowing them to use the pictures and illustrations to aide in comprehension while having a high interest book in hand. \r\n\r\nOur classroom library has been voted the best in the school!!! My students enjoy the calm down area so much, and it is nice to see them have a place to relax. Children are under so much pressure and learning to regulate themselves. Some of them would stay there all day if I would let them!\r\n\r\nThe calm down area is a place of enjoyment and is very popular in our classroom. Only one child is allowed in the calm down area at a time, and we have a 10-minute timer. It has helped things run more smoothly in my classroom. They especially loved the paint markers and rocks. These supplies are being used in our art after school program and during our lunch clubs. Every Wednesday we meet after school from 2:20 to 4 PM. We started our art club with watercolors and will be transitioning to acrylic paint and canvas by the end of the program. The program will run till May offering the children a new art activity every Wednesday. \r\n\r\nWe just finished some winter watercolor scenes and Valentine's Day geometric hearts. Our next project will be some rock love bugs.
